Quick Heal, the Indian cybersecurity
research and software firm of has published its annual threat report for the
year 2019, disclosing its observation of trends in cyber attacks through 2019.
The report shows an interesting but unsurprising find by Quick Heal, that four metropolitans
of India were the most affected by cyber attacks across the nation. The
decreasing order of cyber attacks volumes in the cities are Mumbai, Delhi,
Bengaluru and Kolkata. Also, the report ranked the top three states Maharashtra,
Delhi and West Bengal as the most targeted states in cyber attacks, giving a
brief glimpse at the demographic of cyber attacks in India. The majority of
cyber attacks in India reports break down into two software divisions - —
Windows and Android, covered by the majority of devices in India.
A staggering
973 million instances of attacks for Windows devices are registered through the
past one year equated roughly to 1,852 Windows machines being affected every
minute of the year. Torjans are the biggest damage inflictor in India over the
past one year, which are most frequently generated through illegitimate
software copies, continuing India's issues with legitimate software. The second
and third largest causes of cyber attacks are standalone worms and infectors and
while ransomware attacks were the least frequently spotted in India, at least
one PC was affected via ransomware attacks every 14 minutes lending to the
rapidly growth of cyber terrorism. Crypto-theft attacks are also not far behind
with registered attacks across the country every minute. Trojans were among the
six of the top 10 tools used for cyber attacks, further highlighting the need
to shift to genuine software copies.
The intensity of attacks appear to be far
lesser in Android, than the bombardment handed out to Windows PCs. The most impactful
cyber attack tool on Android appear to be unwanted applications, or
forged/duplicate/malicious apps downloaded on Android phones, striking once
every three minutes with infected apps. According to Quick Heal's report, the
biggest cause of concern, on the Google Play Store appear to be Malware, Adware
and hidden infected apps giving another reason for Google to pay closer
attention to device security.
