Phishing
have been taken by Cyber criminals as the most common way to steal information
through increased sophistication and well-crafted emails, as reported jointly
by consultancy EY and industry body FICCI. Malware attacks come next in the
list attacking on mobile devices as they allow quick getaways. The three most
valuable pieces of information coveted by cyber criminals are Customer
information, Financial data and Strategic plans of companies. For the most
high-profile cyber-attacks India ranks among the top five globally, with
hackers more than 90% under the age of 35, out of which 58% are self-taught,
which means technical education is not relevant. The major cyber crimes other
than this, includes illegal trade on Dark Net markets and use of social media
platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for communication to conduct
frauds. The growing use of block chain among cyber criminals, allows to host
sites that sell illegal services and other sensitive data. India to mitigate
this cyber crimes India needs to develop a strong cyber crime management
ecosystem with concerted effort from LEAs (local education agencies), academia
and industry. There should be a roadmap on cybercrime management with the help
of pertinent stakeholders, awareness campaigns, and consultation among
ministries. The report advises through collaboration between central and state
police formulation of standard cybercrime taxonomy, a formal institutional
framework to resolve challenges involving cybercrime, threat intelligence
sharing. According to a global information security survey by EY in 2018-19 the
top three threats faced by organizations were malware, phishing and disruptive
cyber-attacks. There was a 297% increase as compared to the previous year in
retail phishing websites , the survey showed.
