Techvia Alliance - Google removes 85 apps with adware from Play Store

Security researches at Trend Micro found a particularly annoying adware hiding inside the apps, after which Google has removed 85 apps from its Play Store.  The adware was detected as AndroidOS_Hidenad.HRXH by Trend Micro. The advertisements apart from displaying are difficult to close, it employs unique techniques to evade detection through user behaviour and time-based triggers. Majority of the apps that were discovered found to be disguised as photography as well as gaming apps and was downloaded over eight million times. Some of the most popular among the 85 apps that were discovered by Trend Micro as being adware-infected removed by Google are Super Selfie, Cos Camera, Pop Camera, and One Stroke Line Puzzle. The apps exhibited similar behaviours and shared the same code even though they were uploaded on the Play Store from different developer accounts and were signed by different digital certificates. This adware should ideally affect only those phones that are running on older versions of Android, reported Trend Micro.
